Pinpoint Test C: The Dome Defeat Feature Is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71, Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a voltage signal to the instrument panel dimmer switch to monitor the dome defeat request. The voltage signal is routed through a series of resistors within the switch and then back to the SJB. When the instrument panel dimmer switch is placed in the DOME DEFEAT position, the signal is routed through a single resistor, signaling the SJB a request for the dome defeat feature. When the SJB detects a dome defeat request, the SJB does not turn the courtesy lamps on when a door/liftgate/liftgate glass is opened, a door is unlocked using a key or when the doors are unlocked using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.

- DTC B1687 (Lamp Dome Input Circuit Short to Ground) - a continuous and on-demand DTC that may set when the SJB detects an open or short to voltage from the dome defeat request input circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Instrument panel dimmer switch
- SJB

PINPOINT TEST C: THE DOME DEFEAT FEATURE IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
C1 CHECK THE DIMMABLE LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR CORRECT OPERATION

- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the lowest and highest setting while observing the dimmable components.
- Does the dimmable lighting operate correctly?

Yes
GO to C2.

No
REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.

-------------------------------------------------
C2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMMER SWITCH

- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch C2298.
- Carry out the instrument panel dimmer switch component test.

- Is the instrument panel dimmer switch OK?

Yes
GO to C3.

No
INSTALL a new instrument panel dimmer switch. REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

-------------------------------------------------
C3 CHECK THE DOME DEFEAT REQUEST INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Disconnect: SJB C2280d.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2298-2, circuit VLN36 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

- Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR circuit VLN36 (GY/OG) for a short to voltage. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No
GO to C4.

-------------------------------------------------
C4 CHECK THE DOME DEFEAT REQUEST INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument panel dimmer switch C2298-2, circuit VLN36 (GY/OG), harness side and the SJB C2280d-6, circuit VLN36 (GY/OG), harness side.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to C5.

No
REPAIR circuit VLN36 (GY/OG) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

-------------------------------------------------
C5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION

- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to Body Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR any DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
