Pinpoint Test Z: The Charging System Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On (Base IC)
Normal Operation
The charging system warning indicator is controlled by the Instrument Cluster (IC) based upon data received from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). When a generator malfunction occurs that prevents the generator from charging the battery, the generator regulator grounds the PCM input to ground. The PCM senses the ground state and sends a communication message over the HS-CAN to the IC to illuminate the charging system warning indicator, which indicates a charging system fault has occurred.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Charging system concern
- PCM
- IC
PINPOINT TEST Z: THE CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON (BASE IC)
-------------------------------------------------
Z1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC charging system warning indicator (CHARGE _ LMP) active command. Command the charging system warning indicator on and off. Observe the charging system warning indicator.
- Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to Z2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
Z2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any charging system DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Charging System.
No
GO to Z3.
-------------------------------------------------
Z3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION
- Check the charging system operation. Refer to Charging System.
- Does the charging system operate correctly?
Yes
GO to Z4.
No
REFER to Charging System.
-------------------------------------------------
Z4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U1900, REFER to Information Bus.
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
