Pinpoint Test G: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the vehicle speed data from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The PCM receives the vehicle speed data from the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. The IC monitors the vehicle speed input from the PCM and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
The odometer indicates the vehicle distance traveled whenever the ignition switch is in the RUN position, based upon rolling count data sent from the PCM over the HS-CAN. The IC provides a reset button to allow the trip odometer to be reset to 0. When the reset button is pressed, the trip odometer is reset. The trip odometer accumulates and registers up to 999.9 kilometers or 999.9 miles.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM
- IC
PINPOINT TEST G: THE SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
-------------------------------------------------
G1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to G2.
-------------------------------------------------
G2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U1900, REFER to Information Bus.
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to G3.
-------------------------------------------------
G3 CARRY OUT THE IC SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command. Command the speedometer on and off. Observe the speedometer.
- Does the speedometer start at 0 and move to 193 km/h (120 mph) when commanded on, and return to 0 when commanded off?
Yes
GO to G4.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
G4 MONITOR THE DISPLAY SEGMENT CONTROL DISPLAY
- Observe the odometer in the message center (message center IC) or integrated circuit (base IC) display area.
- Does the odometer display ERROR?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Computers and Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
