Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR

Removal and Installation

WARNING: When carrying out maintenance on the starting system, be aware heavy gauge leads are connected to the battery. Make sure protective caps are in place when maintenance is complete.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL position it on a hoist.

2. NOTE: The 6.0L diesel uses two frame mount batteries. The ground path is through the frame.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.







3. Remove the retaining nut and position the cable bracket aside.







4. Remove the starter solenoid protective cap.







5. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections.







6. Remove the bolts and the starter.
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Install the starter bolts finger tight.
- Tighten the upper bolt.
- Tighten the lower bolts.
