Principles of Operation (How Does It Work?)
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATIONThe instrument panel dimmer switch allows the brightness level of the backlights to be adjusted dependent on the customer preferences. When the headlamp switch is in the PARK or ON position the intensity of the backlighting can be adjusted using the panel dim switch.
Instrument Cluster and Dimmable Backlighting
The generic electronic module (GEM) provides a ground for the park lamp relay when the headlamp switch is in the PARK or ON position. The instrument panel dimmer switch is a momentary contact switch that signals the desired level of brightness sent to the instrument cluster. The park lamp relay and the instrument panel dimmer switch both provide the inputs necessary for the instrument cluster to process and provide the appropriate voltage to the backlight illumination bulbs. The instrument cluster is a hybrid electronic cluster (HEC).
Non-Dimmable Backlighting
The power window switch (if equipped) backlight is a constantly illuminating bulb which illuminates when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. The generic electronic module (GEM) provides a ground path for the accessory delay relay to provide B+ to the power window switch.
