Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair
Catalytic ConverterRemoval
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Disconnect the two heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
3. Disconnect the two catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
4. Remove the RH heat shield-to-crossmember bolt.
5. Remove the LH heat shield-to-crossmember bolt.
6. Remove the nuts.
7. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission.
8. Remove the four upper transmission crossmember bolts.
9. Remove the four lower transmission crossmember bolts and the crossmember.
10. Remove the bolts, springs and flag nuts and separate the muffler from the converter.
- Discard the gasket.
- Discard the flag nuts.
11. Using a suitable jackstand, support the converter assembly.
12. Remove the bolt and the isolator bracket.
13. Remove the four converter-to-manifold nuts and remove the converter assembly.
14. If necessary, remove the heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors.
Installation
1. NOTE: Make sure to apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the sensors before installation.
If removed, install the heated oxygen and catalyst monitor sensors.
2. Position the converter on the jack stand and loosely install the four converter-to-manifold nuts.
3. Install the isolator bracket and loosely install the bolt.
4. Using a new gasket, install the bolts, springs and flag nuts.
5. Tighten the four converter-to-manifold nuts.
6. Tighten the bolt.
7. Remove the jack stand.
8. Position the transmission crossmember and install the four lower bolts.
9. Install the four upper crossmember bolts.
10. Install the nuts.
11. Remove the transmission jack.
12. Install the bolt.
13. Install the bolt.
14. Connect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
15. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
16. Lower the vehicle.
