Timing Cover: Service and Repair
NOTE: Ford does not provide timing marks or additional information for servicing of the timing chains/sprockets without the special tools listed in this procedure.
Engine Front Cover
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal. Front Crankshaft Seal
4. Remove the brackets.
5. Remove the lower cylinder block cradle-to-engine front cover bolts.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the bolts.
8. Remove the accessory bracket and position aside.
9. Disconnect the generator wiring and position the wiring aside.
10. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
11. Remove generator mounting bracket and position aside.
12. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
13. Remove the wiring anchors and position the wiring aside.
14. Remove the wiring harness anchor and position the wiring aside.
15. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
16. Remove the thermostat housing.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Release the bypass hose clamp.
17. Release the hose clamp and remove the lower heater water hose.
18. Remove the bracket bolt.
19. Release the hose clamp and remove the lower radiator hose.
20. NOTE: The water pump is removed for clarity.
Remove the engine front cover.
- Discard the gaskets.
Installation
1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scraper, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces, these tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces. Install a new gasket.
2. Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan and the engine block mating surfaces.
3. Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover in two places.
4. Install the engine front cover.
5. Install the lower radiator hose and clamp.
6. Install the bracket bolt.
7. Install the lower heater water hose and clamp.
8. Install the thermostat housing.
1 Install the bypass hose onto the water pump.
2 Install the bolts.
3 Position the bypass hose clamp.
9. Connect the upper radiator hose.
10. Install the wiring anchor.
11. Secure the wiring anchors.
12. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
13. Install the generator mounting bracket.
14. Connect the generator wiring.
15. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner.
16. Install the accessory bracket.
17. Install the bolts.
18. Raise and support the vehicle.
19. Install the cylinder block cradle-to-engine front cover bolts.
20. Install the brackets.
21. Drain the engine oil.
22. Install the crankshaft front oil seal.
23. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
24. Fill the engine with coolant.
25. Connect the negative battery cable.
