POWER WINDOWS - INOPERATIVE - FUSE OPENS - VEHICLES BUILT 9/1/96 THROUGH 1/13/97

LIGHT TRUCK:
1997 ECONOLINE

ISSUE:
The power windows may be inoperative on some vehicles. This may be caused by the 30 amp fuse opening due to the current draw of the window motors.

ACTION:
Install a non-cycling circuit breaker in the window motor circuit. The circuit breaker should reduce the possibility of the 30 amp fuse opening. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the instrument panel fuse panel from its mounting bracket by inserting a screwdriver into the locking finger to release and remove the panel box.

3. Remove the fuse panel cover by pressing inward on the two (2) locking tabs indicated by the arrows.

4. Remove the large red locking wedge by pulling forward.

5. Locate the red/light blue wire, Circuit 170 at Fuse Socket 21 protruding from the backside of the instrument panel fuse panel.

6. Remove the terminal from the fuse panel in Socket 21 by lifting on the locking tab on the front of the fuse panel. Pull the wire with terminal out of Socket 21. Cut the terminal off the end of the wire and dispose.

7. Remove the smaller red locking wedge on the instrument panel fuse panel.

8. Obtain jumper wire "A" (black/light green with two (2) terminals one (1) on each end).

9. Install the small terminal of jumper "A" into the empty instrument panel fuse panel socket for Fuse 21.

10. Install the larger terminal of jumper "A" into the bottom-most ATO slot in the fuse panel.

11. Obtain jumper "B" (red/light blue with one (1) terminal) and install the terminal into the second ATO slot.

12. Splice the end of jumper "B" to the red/light blue wire from Step 6 utilizing splicing techniques and shrink wrap using the Ford-approved Wire Harness Terminal Repair Kit/Guide.

13. Secure jumpers to the main harness behind the fuse panel with either electrical tape or tie straps.

14. Reinstall both red wedges.

15. Install the mini shunt bar in Fuse 21 slot in the fuse panel.

16. Install the circuit breaker in the lower ATO slot.

17. Modify the fuse panel cover. Cut out an area for the circuit breaker to protrude through due to its size and shape.

18. Install the cover.

19. Wrap electrical tape around circuit breaker and fuse panel to make sure circuit breaker remains in place.

20. Reinstall the fuse panel to its mounting brackets.

21. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
