Removal
1. Disconnect the battery.WARNING: On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary battery, both the negative and positive battery cables must be disconnected.
2. Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly.
3. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
4. Remove the engine cover.
5. Remove the (A) nuts. Separate the (B) vapor management valve assembly from the (C) cowl, and position it aside.
6. Remove the (A) nut and the (B) bolt. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, separate the (C) fluid filler tube from the (D) stud and the (E) short fluid inlet tube, and position it aside.
7. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
8. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.
NOTE: As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for proper location during installation.
9. Raise and support the vehicle.
10. Remove the driveshaft.
11. Remove the transmission-mounted parking brake assembly (if so equipped).
12. Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
13. Remove the starter motor.
14. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
15. If so equipped, remove the (A) fasteners and the (B) front A/C deflector assembly.
16. Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts.
(1) Rotate the (A) crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft retaining bolt to position the (B) torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nut in the center of the (C) cylinder block opening.
(2) Remove and discard the (B) torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nut.
- Repeat substeps 1 and 2 for each of the remaining torque converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts.
17. Secure the (A) Highlift Transmission Jack with the (B) E40D Transmission Jack Adapter to the (C) transmission.
18. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
(1) Remove the exhaust heat shield-to-crossmember retaining bolts.
(2) Remove the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts.
(3) Remove the stud brackets.
(4) Support the transmission support crossmember.
(5) Remove the (A) transmission insulator and retainer-to-crossmember retaining nuts and the (B) transmission support crossmember.
19. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe and the exhaust heat shields.
20. With a suitable drain pan properly positioned, disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the cooler bypass valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
21. Remove the (A) bolts and the (B) flywheel inspection plate.
22. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts.
NOTE: The transmission jack is not illustrated for clarity.
23. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
(1) Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flywheel.
(2) Back the transmission, with the jack, out and away from the engine until the torque converter is clear of the flywheel.
(3) Lower the transmission jack.
CAUTION: Watch for obstructions.
(4) Remove the transmission from under the vehicle.
24. If required, remove the torque converter from the transmission.
(1) Install the torque converter handles and position them at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
(2) Carefully remove the (A) torque converter from the (B) transmission by pulling evenly on the handles.
WARNING: The torque converter is very heavy.
NOTE: Fluid loss will occur when the torque converter is removed.
