WARNING:
^ R-134A IS CLASSIFIED AS A SAFE REFRIGERANT, BUT MISUSE CAN MAKE IT DANGEROUS. THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS MUST BE OBSERVED.
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM.
^ AVOID CONTACT WITH LIQUID REFRIGERANT R-134A. R-134A VAPORIZES AT APPROXIMATELY -25°C (-20°F) UNDER ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND IT WILL FREEZE SKIN TISSUE.
^ NEVER ALLOW REFRIGERANT R-134A GAS TO ESCAPE IN QUANTITY IN AN OCCUPIED SPACE. R-134A IS NON-TOXIC, BUT IT WILL NOT FURNISH THE OXYGEN NEEDED TO SUPPORT LIFE.
^ NEVER USE A TORCH IN AN ATMOSPHERE CONTAINING R-134A GAS. R-134A IS NON-TOXIC AT ALL NORMAL CONDITIONS, BUT WHEN IT IS EXPOSED TO HIGH TEMPERATURES, SUCH AS A TORCH FLAME, IT DECOMPOSES. ONE OF THE PRODUCTS OF THE CHEMICAL BREAKDOWN IS A PHOSGENE GAS, WHICH IS HIGHLY TOXIC.
^ DO NOT ALLOW ANY PORTION OF THE CHARGED AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM TO BECOME TOO HOT. THE PRESSURE IN AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM RISES AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES AND TEMPERATURES OF APPROXIMATELY 85°C (200°F) CAN BE DANGEROUS.
CAUTION:
^ Only the A/C Flushing Kit, which includes the A/C Flusher, A/C Flusher Fitting Kit, and Ford A/C System Flushing Solvent, is approved for use on Ford vehicles. No other flushing device or solvent is approved for flushing heat exchangers. Use of any other flusher or solvent can cause damage to the A/C system and the flushing unit.
^ Do not flush the A/C evaporator core orifice or hoses. The internal plumbing and material make-up of these items make it impossible to properly remove the debris and residual flushing fluid that can cause premature system failure.
^ The flushing solvent and flushing unit filter are intended for one vehicle use only. They can be used to flush one or all of the heat exchangers in the A/C system. Failure to change the flushing solvent and filter can spread A/C system contamination.
NOTE: The A/C system filtering as described in this section is optional if A/C system flushing is performed. Filter kit use is recommended after flushing, however, if the A/C system contamination is extensive.
1. Recover the refrigerant. Refrigerant Recovery
2. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the heat exchanger(s) to be flushed.
3. Connect the A/C Flusher and A/C Flusher Fitting Kit to the heat exchanger to be flushed. Refer to the equipment manufacturer's procedures and instructions for use of the R-134a service center.
4. Flush the heat exchanger.
^ Use 4 liters (1 gallon) of Ford A/C Flushing Solvent F4AZ-19597-A.
^ Back-flush for a minimum of 15 minutes.
5. Purge the heat exchanger.
^ Apply 621-862 kPa (90-125 psi) of pressurized air for 30 minutes.
CAUTION: Failure to successfully remove all of the residual solvent within the component can result in A/C system damage when it is reconnected and operated.
NOTE: Dispose of the flushing solvent and filter in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws.
6. Replace the suction accumulator/drier and A/C evaporator core orifice on any vehicle being serviced for A/C compressor or desiccant failure.
7. Replace any refrigerant hoses that are clogged with debris.
8. Reconnect the heat exchanger being serviced.
9. Add additional refrigerant oil as required.
10. Evacuate, charge, and leak test the A/C system. Evacuation
11. Check the A/C system for proper operation.
