Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Recover the refrigerant.

NOTE: Cap or plug all open refrigerant line fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE AIR BAG SYSTEM BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING ANY CLIMATE CONTROL COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO STARTER CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.

3. Drain the engine cooling system.
4. Remove the fan shroud.
5. Remove the drive belt.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.







7. Disconnect the A/C clutch electrical connector.







8. Disconnect the sensor connector.







9. Remove the bolts.







10. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube.
a. Slide the A/C compressor forward.
b. Loosen the bolt.
c. Remove the A/C manifold and tube.

CAUTION: Support the MC compressor while removing the A/C manifold and tube to prevent injury or A/C compressor damage.

11. Remove the A/C compressor.

INSTALLATION
1. Add new clean Motorcraft refrigerant oil YN-12b or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B.

NOTE: Whenever replacing an A/C system component or refrigerant line new, clean refrigerant oil must be added.

2. Position the A/C compressor.

CAUTION: Support the A/C compressor while installing the A/C manifold and tube to prevent injury or A/C compressor damage.







3. Install the A/C manifold and tube.
a. Install two new green O-rings.

NOTE: The green O-ring(s) cannot be seen. They are located in the connection(s).

b. Install the A/C manifold and tube.
c. Tighten the bolt.
d. Slide the A/C compressor to the rear.







4. Install the bolts.







5. Connect the sensor connector.







6. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Install the drive belt.
9. Install the fan shroud.
10. Fill the engine cooling system.
11. Replace the suction accumulator/drier.

CAUTION: If the A/C compressor is being replaced due to failure, the suction accumulator/drier must be replaced at the same time.

12. Reconnect the battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.

13. Filter the A/C system.

CAUTION: If the A/C compressor is being replaced due to failure, the A/C system must be filtered to remove any remaining debris.

14. Evacuate, charge, and leak test the A/C system.
15. Check the A/C system for proper operation.
