Removal

NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified.

WARNING: DO NOT SMOKE OR CARRY LIGHTED TOBACCO OR OPEN FLAME OF ANY TYPE WHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR ANY FUEL-RELATED COMPONENTS. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE MIXTURES ARE ALWAYS PRESENT AND CAN BE IGNITED, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. FUEL IN THE FUEL SYSTEM REMAINS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the cam covers.
3. Remove the radiator.





4. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector.
5. Remove the water pump.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.





7. Remove the power steering pump bolts and the power steering pump, and set aside.

NOTE: Only three bolts are required to secure the power steering pump.





8. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
9. Remove the drain plug, and drain the engine oil.





10. Remove the crankshaft front seal.
11. Remove the front oil pan bolts.
12. Lower the vehicle.





13. Remove the engine front cover fasteners.





14. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowels.





15. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.





16. Use the Crankshaft Holding Tool to position the crankshaft as shown.

CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinders heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.





17. Install the Camshaft Holding Tools on the camshafts.





18. Remove the timing chain tensioner bolts and the timing chain tensioners. Remove the timing chain tensioner guides from the dowel pins.





19. Remove the LH and RH timing chains and the crankshaft sprocket.
^ Remove the RH timing chain from the camshaft sprocket.
^ Remove the RH timing chain and outer crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft.
^ Repeat for the LH timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.





20. Remove the timing chain guides.
^ Remove the timing chain guide bolts.
^ Remove the timing chain guides.
