Draining and Filling

DRAINING
1. Once pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.

WARNING: NEVER REMOVE THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING OR WHEN THE COOLING SYSTEM IS HOT. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM OR ENGINE OR PERSONAL INJURY. TO AVOID HAVING SCALDING HOT COOLANT OR STEAM BLOW OUT OF THE DEGAS BOTTLE WHEN REMOVING THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP, WAIT UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, THEN WRAP A THICK CLOTH AROUND THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP AND TURN IT SLOWLY. STEP BACK WHILE THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM. WHEN YOU ARE SURE ALL THE PRESSURE HAS BEEN RELEASED, (STILL WITH A CLOTH)TURN AND REMOVE THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP.

2. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock, and open the drain cock. If so equipped, disconnect the coolant return hose at the oil cooler.
3. Remove the cylinder drain plug to drain the coolant from the cylinder block.

NOTE: Some coolant will be retained in the cylinder block if the cylinder block drain plugs are not removed. When refilling the cooling system after flushing, adjust the coolant mix ratio to obtain a 50/50 mix. Be certain to account for approximately 4.8 liters (5.1 quarts) of liquid left in the cylinder block if drain plugs are not removed.

FILLING
1. Check all hose clamps for proper tightness.

NOTE: A 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or -B (in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water is required to prevent damage to the cooling system.

2. Close the radiator drain cock.
3. Install the cylinder block drain plugs, if removed.
4. Place the heater temperature selector in the maximum heat position.
5. Add coolant to the degas bottle until the coolant level reaches the COLD FILL level.

CAUTION: Use extreme care to keep coolant mixture off of the drive belt and pulleys. If necessary, remove the drive belt and rinse with clear water. Clean the drive belt pulleys. Failure to do so can cause belt squeal and early belt fatigue.

6. Start the engine and allow the vehicle to warm up. Add coolant, as required, to maintain coolant at the full mark on the degas bottle.
7. Install the pressure relief cap on the degas bottle.
