Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING AN AIR BAG VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAGS. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ AIR BAG MODULES WITH DISCOLORED OR DAMAGED COVERS OR DEPLOYMENT DOORS MUST BE REPLACED, NOT REPAINTED.
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE. DEPLETED BEFORE SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.


CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage can result.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the steering column.







3. Remove the engine cover.
^ Unfasten the engine cover latches and remove the engine cover.







4. Remove the four screws from the top of the instrument panel.







5. Remove the upper center instrument panel access panel.







6. Disconnect the climate control air vacuum connector.







7. Remove the headlamp knob and bezel.







8. Remove the left instrument panel finish panel.
1. Remove the two bolts.
2. Remove the instrument panel finish panel.







9. Remove the instrument cluster.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
3. Remove the transmission range indicator.
4. Remove the instrument cluster.







10. Remove the three headlamp switch bolts.







11. Disconnect the headlamp switch electrical connector.







12. Remove the radio.
^ Disconnect the radio electrical connectors and the antenna.







13. Pry the center finish panel away from the instrument panel and position it out of the way.







14. Disconnect the cigar lighter electrical connector and power point electrical connector.
15. Remove the center finish panel.







16. Remove the climate control panel assembly.
1. Remove the three climate control panel screws.
2. Remove the climate control panel assembly from the center finish panel.







17. Disconnect the climate control wiring harnesses from behind the climate control panel.







18. Remove the driver side upper left access panel to access the instrument panel nut.







19. Remove the instrument panel nut retaining the instrument panel to the main bracket.







20. Remove the passenger side instrument panel finish panel reinforcement.
1. Remove the four reinforcement bolts.
2. Remove the instrument panel finish panel reinforcement.







21. Remove the instrument panel dash brace.
1. Remove the six dash brace bolts.
2. Remove the instrument panel dash brace.







22. From under the hood, remove the two coolant reservoir screws and position the reservoir out of the way.







23. Remove the main wiring assembly/lower bulkhead connector.
1. Remove the bulkhead connector bolt.
2. Disconnect the bulkhead connector clips.
3. Remove the bulkhead connector.







24. Remove the right-hand cowl side trim panel.
^ Pry the cowl side trim panel from the body side and remove.







25. Disconnect the air bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module electrical connector.
1. Disconnect the ECS electrical connector locking clip.
2. Disconnect the ECS electrical connector.







26. Disconnect the instrument panel cowl side wiring electrical connectors.







27. Disconnect the passenger side air bag module electrical connector.







28. Remove the two locators on the radio antenna from the wiring shield (passenger side).







29. Remove the six bolts (one on each of the two center brackets and two on each end) retaining the instrument panel to the center dash panel.
30. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle through the passenger side door.
^ Lift the instrument panel upward slightly and outward to remove from the dash panel.

NOTE: Removing the instrument panel from the vehicle requires two technicians.

INSTALLATION

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING AN AIR BAG VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAGS. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ AIR BAG MODULES WITH DISCOLORED OR DAMAGED COVERS OR DEPLOYMENT DOORS MUST BE REPLACED, NOT REPAINTED.
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.

NOTE: When replacing the instrument panel with a new' service instrument panel, the climate control air ducts and the passenger side air bag assembly must be reinstalled onto the new service instrument panel.







1. Position the instrument panel to the center dash panel.







2. Install the six bolts (one on each of the two center brackets and two on each end) and secure the instrument panel to the center dash panel.
3. Reposition the antenna wire onto the wiring shield and install the two locators.







4. Reconnect the passenger side air bag module electrical connector.







5. Reconnect the instrument panel cowl side wiring electrical connectors.







6. Reconnect the air bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module electrical connector.
1. Reconnect the ECS electrical connector.
2. Reconnect the ECS electrical connector locking clip.







7. Install the right-hand cowl side trim panel.







8. From under the hood, install the main wiring assembly/lower bulkhead connector.
1. Position the bulkhead connector.
2. Secure the bulkhead connector clips.
3. Install the bulkhead connector bolt.







9. Install the coolant reservoir and secure with the two coolant reservoir screws.







10. Install the instrument panel dash brace.
1. Position the instrument panel dash brace.
2. Install the six dash brace bolts.







11. Install the passenger side instrument panel finish panel reinforcement.
1. Position the finish panel reinforcement.
2. Install the four finish panel reinforcement bolts.







12. Install the instrument panel nut retaining the instrument panel to the main bracket.







13. Install the driver side upper left access panel.







14. Reconnect the climate control wiring harnesses.







15. Install the climate control panel assembly.
1. Position the climate control panel assembly.
2. Install the three climate control panel screws.







16. Reconnect the cigar lighter connector and the power point connector.







17. Install the center finish panel.







18. Install the radio.
^ Reconnect the radio connectors and the antenna.







19. Reconnect the headlamp switch connector and install the three headlamp switch bolts.







20. Install the instrument cluster.
1. Position the instrument cluster.
2. Install the transmission range indicator.
3. Reconnect the electrical connectors.
4. Install the bolts.







21. Install the left instrument panel finish panel.
1. Position the instrument panel finish panel.
2. Install the two bolts.







22. Install the headlamp knob and bezel.







23. Reconnect the climate control air vacuum connector.







24. Install the upper center instrument panel access panel.







25. Install the four upper instrument panel screws.







26. Install the engine cover.
^ Position the engine cover in the vehicle and fasten the cover latches.
27. Install the steering column.
28. Reconnect the battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy
