Vehicle Identification Number







The vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal plate riveted to the instrument panel, where it can be read through the windshield on the driver side. The VIN is repeated on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.







The First Two Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Position Codes Indicate The Manufacturer:
1F- Ford Motor Company, USA
2F- Ford Motor Company of Canada, Ltd.
3F- Ford Motor Company of Mexico

The Third VIN Position Code Is For The Vehicle Type
B- Bus
C- Basic (stripped) chassis
D- Incomplete vehicle (IV)
F- Motor vehicle equipment without engine/powertrain (glider)
M- Completed vehicle
T- Truck complete vehicle







The Fourth VIN Position is for The Brake System and the
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) Class. All Brake
Systems are Hydraulic. The Codes are:

A- less than 3,000 pounds
B- 3,001-4,000 pounds
C- 4,001-5,000 pounds
D- 5,001-6,000 pounds
E- 6,001-7,000 pounds
F- 7,001-8,O00pounds
G- 8,001-8,500 pounds
H- 8,501-9,000 pounds
J- 9,001-10,000 pounds
K- 10,001-14,000 pounds
L- 14,001-16,000 pounds
M- 16,001-19,500 pounds







The Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh VIN Positions are the
Codes for the Model or Line, Series, Chassis and Cab or
Body Type.


A. The (1) Body Type Codes Are:
E- Club Wagon
S- Super Van

B. The (2) Series Type Codes Are:
11- E150Club Wagon
14- E150 Cargo Van
24- E250 Cargo Van regular or super
27- E250 Commercial Cutaway
E29- E250 Commercial Basic (Stripped) Chassis
30- E350 RV Cutaway
31- E350 Heavy Duty Club Wagon
34- E350 Cargo Van - regular or super
37- E350 Commercial Cutaway
E39- E350 Commercial Basic (Stripped) Chassis







The Eighth VIN Position is for the Engine Displacement and Number of Cylinders. The Codes are:

6 - 4.6L V-8 gasoline, Ford
L - 5.4L V-8 gasoline, Ford
5 - 6.8L V-8 gasoline, Ford
2 - 4.2L V-6 gasoline, Ford
F - 7.3L (444 cu. in.) V-8 diesel, Navistar







The Ninth VIN Position is a Check Digit. The Check Digit for the 1997 Model Year is:

The Eleventh VIN Position is the Code for the Assembly
Plant.


B - Oakville; Oakville, Ontario
C - Ontario Truck; Oakville, Ontario
D - Ohio; Avon Lake, Ohio
E - Kentucky Truck; Jefferson, Kentucky
H - Lorain; Lorain, Ohio
J - Immsa; Monterrey, Mexico
K - Kansas City; Claycomo, Missouri
L - Michigan Truck; Wayne, Michigan
N - Norfolk; Norfolk, Virginia
P - Twin Cities; St. Paul, Minnesota
T - Edison; Edison, New Jersey
U - Louisville; Louisville, Kentucky
V - Kentucky Truck; Jefferson, Kentucky
Z - St. Louis; Hazelwood, Missouri







The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the build sequence. This is also the serial and warranty number. The first vehicle built would be A00001 and the next would be A00002. After A99999, the next number would be B00001.
