Removal
1. Disconnect and isolate the (-) negative battery cable from the negative post on the battery.2. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
3. Remove gear shift cable, from shift lever on transaxle.
4. Remove the bolt attaching the gear shift cable retainer and transaxle dipstick tube to the transaxle. Remove gear shift cable from transaxle.
5. Lower vehicle.
6. Remove both wiper arm assemblies from wiper arm pivots.
7. Remove the 6 screws attaching the cowl closure panel to the cowl. Remove the cowl closure panel and weatherstrip as an assembly from the cowl.
8. Disconnect the wiper module wiring harness connector from the vehicle wiring harness.
9. Remove the 5 screws attaching the wiper module to the cowl panel of the vehicle. Then remove wiper module from cowl panel.
10. Remove vacuum supply hose for power brake booster at intake manifold, and position hose out of the way.
11. Remove the 2 nuts attaching the master cylinder assembly to the vacuum booster. Remove the master cylinder with the brake tubes connected, from the vacuum booster. Carefully position the master cylinder assembly against left shock tower.
12. Remove the power steering pressure hose and return hose from the power steering gear
13. Position the front tires of the vehicle so that they are facing straight ahead. Bend back retaining tabs on bolts attaching tie rods to steering gear. Loosen and remove bolts attaching tie rods to steering gear. Lay tie rods, bolts and plate as an assembly on bell housing of transaxle.
14. If the steering gear being removed from the vehicle is a speed proportional steering gear, remove the wiring harness connector, coming from the vehicle wiring harness, from the solenoid control module.
CAUTION: Prior to separating the intermediate shaft coupler from the steering column shaft, position the key in the lock position and remove the key from the lock cylinder. This will eliminate the possibility of the steering wheel rotating more than its half turn to the locked position. Thus, preventing damage to the clockspring from rotating it beyond its normal number of turns in either direction.
15. Remove the retaining pin and pinch bolt from the coupler on the intermediate shaft. Then separate the intermediate shaft coupler from the steering column shaft.
16. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the steering gear assembly to the crossmember.
17. Slide steering gear and intermediate shaft forward into the engine compartment to allow access to the roll pin retaining the flex coupler to the steering gear shaft.
18. Using roll pin remover, Special Tool 6831A, or equivalent remove roll pin from flex joint of intermediate shaft. Roll pin is removed from coupler using following procedure. Remove knurled nut from small end of removal tool. Insert small end of removal tool through center of roll pin and then install and hand tighten knurled nut. Position sleeve of removal tool on flex joint as shown. Holding threaded shaft of tool from turning tighten nut pulling roll pin out of flex joint.
19. Remove steering gear assembly from vehicle through area in cowl that the windshield wiper module was previously removed from.
