Power Steering Pump Removal and Installation

NOTE: Cap all open ends of the power steering fluid hoses. This will prevent the entry of foreign material into the components when power steering hoses are removed.

WARNING: Power steering oil, engine components and the exhaust system may be extremely hot if engine has been running. Do not start engine with any loose or disconnected hoses or drive belts. Do not allow hoses to touch hot exhaust manifold or catalyst.

REMOVE
1. Remove the battery cable from the negative post on the battery and isolate the cable.

2. Loosen the power steering pump serpentine drive belt, by loosening the alternator mounting bolt A and the adjusting bolt locknut B. Then loosen adjusting bolt.
3. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
4. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the power steering pump pulley, and store out of the way.

5. Remove the hose clamp from the power steering fluid supply hose, at the power steering pump. Then remove the hose from the power

6. Remove the power steering fluid pressure hose from power steering pump discharge fitting.

7. Remove the 3 bolts attaching the power steering pump to power steering pump bracket. Access to the power steering pump mounting bolts is through the holes in the power steering pump drive pulley.

8. Remove the power steering pump and the drive pulley as an assembly from the vehicle. Power steering pump is removable from the bottom of engine compartment.
9. Transfer the required parts from the removed power steering pump, to the replacement power steering pump

INSTALL
1. Install power steering pump back in vehicle from the bottom of the engine compartment.
2. Install power steering pump back on mounting bracket. Install the 3 bolts attaching the power steering pump to the mounting bracket. Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts to a torque of 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
3. Install hose from remote power steering fluid reservoir, on low pressure port of power steering pump.
4. Install the drive belt on the power steering pump drive pulley.
5. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
6. Install the power steering pressure hose in the outlet port of the power steering pump. Tighten the power steering fluid pressure hose fitting to a torque of 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
7. Install serpentine accessory drive belt on engine.
8. Connect battery cable onto negative post on battery.

CAUTION: Do not use automatic transmission fluid in power steering system. Only use Mopar (R), Power Steering Fluid, or equivalent.

9. Fill the power steering pump reservoir to correct fluid level.
10. Start engine and turn steering wheel several times from stop to stop to bleed air from fluid in system. Stop engine, check fluid level, and inspect system for leaks.
