Transaxle Replacement

Remove transaxle in numbered sequence,, noting the following:
1. Remove battery.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Drain transaxle oil.
4. Remove undercover.
5. Remove transfer case.
6. Using a suitable jack, slightly raise transaxle, then remove mounting bracket nuts. Do not tilt transaxle assembly.

7. Use special engine support tool No. MZ203827, or equivalent, to support engine assembly.

8. Using special tool No. MB991113, or equivalent, remove tie rod ends, lateral lower arms, and compression lower arms.
NOTE:
Loosen but do not remove nuts. Suspend special tool by cord to hold in place.

9. Remove driveshaft nut using special tool No. MB990767, or equivalent.

10. Disconnect driveshaft as follows:

a. Insert pry bar between transaxle case and driveshaft, then pry driveshaft from transaxle.
CAUTION:
Do not pull on driveshaft, as doing so will damage inboard joint. Do not insert pry bar so deep as to damage oil seal.

NOTE:
Suspend driveshaft with suitable wire.

11. Lightly tap center bearing bracket using a suitable plastic hammer to remove inner shaft from transaxle.
12. Remove clutch release cylinder without disconnecting fluid line and suspend it nearby with suitable wire.

13. Reverse procedure to install noting;

a. Inspect front roll stopper. If dimension shown is not 1.57-1.81 inches, replace roll stopper bracket assembly.
b. Ensure serrated part of driveshaft does not damage oil seal lip.

c. Install driveshaft nut washer as shown. Using special tool No. MB990767, or equivalent, tighten driveshaft nut as specified. Ensure there is no load on wheel bearings.
