A. Fuel Tank Removal
1. Insert a siphon hose into the fuel tank filler tube and drain the fuel into an approved gasoline holding tank.2. Remove the rear seat cushion.
3. Remove the five screws that secure the right (passenger) side fuel pump inspection cover and electrical harness and then remove the cover.
4. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
5. Start the engine and let it run until it runs out of fuel.
6. With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.
Note:
To enhance customer satisfaction, remember to record all radio settings before disconnecting the battery and to reset all electronic memory (clock, radio settings, etc.) when you have completed the service procedure.
7. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.
8. Inscribe mating marks on the differential companion flange and the flange yoke (Figure 1).
9. Remove the heat shield from the front driveshaft support.
10. Remove the driveshaft supports.
11. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential and carefully remove the driveshaft.
12. Remove the rear oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe and allow it to hang from the wiring. It is not necessary to disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
13. Disconnect the front of the center exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter.
14. Disconnect the exhaust pipe ground strap.
15. Disconnect the center exhaust pipe from the muffler and then remove the center exhaust pipe.
16. Remove the exhaust hangar bracket located in front of the fuel tank.
17. Remove the fuel tank protector (Figure 3).
NOTE:
The right rear protector attaching bolt may be difficult to access, but it can be removed using a 1/4" drive swivel socket. The rear differential does not have to be removed.
18. Disconnect the brake line brackets from the fuel tank support straps.
19. Disconnect the fuel supply and return hoses from the steel fuel tubes. Disconnect the fuel vapor hose from the steel vapor tube (Figure 2).
20. Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack.
21. Disconnect the fuel filler hose from the filler neck (Figure 3).
NOTE:
The hose clamp may have to be rotated or cut off to allow the hose to be disconnected. A new clamp has been provided for reassembly.
22. Remove the tank retaining straps.
23. Lower the tank and remove it from under the vehicle.
NOTE:
The fuel tank fits tightly between the rear differential and the body. Rotate the front of the tank downward until the rollover valve clears the body and then pull the tank forward and down to remove it.
