SUBJECT:
Sunroof Ratcheting Sound or Jerky Operation
MODELS:
1995 - 1996 (FJ) Avenger/Sebring/Talon
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Ratcheting sounds during sunroof operation or sunroof does not operate smoothly. This condition occurs after the sunroof drive motor was removed and re-installed during a sunroof repair.
DISCUSSION:
When performing a repair that requires the removal/installation of an original or replacement sunroof drive motor, care must be exercised to prevent the loss of a metal insert clip that fits over the drive gear. This insert clip holds the cables tightly against the drive gear and insures positive engagement of the cables to the gear. Improper cable to gear engagement will cause noisy operation, binding, or jerky sunroof operation.
Following are a few items to pay attention to when an operation requires motor removal:
A. When a sunroof drive motor is removed, care must be taken to prevent the loss of the clip.
B. Before installing the original or replacement motor, make sure the clip is inserted over the drive gear as shown in the illustration.
C. If replacing the drive motor with a new assembly, make sure the insert clip is installed over the motor drive gear. If the clip is lost, transfer the clip from the original motor before installing the assembly into the sunroof.
NOTE:
THE INSERT CLIP IS INCLUDED WITH THE DRIVE MOTOR ASSEMBLY P/N MB926033. IT CANNOT BE ORDERED SEPARATELY. CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED TO PREVENT ITS LOSS.
