Rear Quarter Trim - Buzz or Rattle

NO: 23-73-95

GROUP: Body

DATE: Nov. 24, 1995

SUBJECT:
Rear Quarter Trim Buzz or Rattle

MODELS:
1995 - 1996 (FJ) Talon

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO AUG. 21, 1995 (MDH 08-21-XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some subject vehicles may exhibit a buzz or rattle from the rear quarter trim while the audio system is being used. This noise is more noticeable when deep bass tones are emitted from the speakers.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR 06375 3M Foam Tape 3M"x1/8" or equivalent

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves removing the rear lower quarter trim panel, testing the speakers, securing the speakers, and applying foam tape to the panel to isolate the mounting clips.

1. Verify the buzz/rattle by operating the radio with deep bass tones and different types of music.
2. After noise verification, remove the rear lower quarter trim from the suspected side(s) of the vehicle. Re-test the vehicle. If the buzz or rattle disappears, proceed to step 6.

3. If the buzz/rattle is still present after quarter trim removal, check speaker mounting for tightness as follows (Figure 1):
a. Tighten speaker bracket (2 bolts/1 screw) to the body panel. If necessary, add washers to the mounts to prevent nut or screw pull through.
b. Tighten speaker (4 screws) to the bracket. Make sure the speaker screws are able to securely mount the speaker to the bracket. If the bracket is stripped or cracked, replace the bracket.
4. Check sound deadener patches in the area to make sure they are firmly attached to the body panel. If not, press firmly to re-attach patches.
5. If the noise is still present after speaker screw tightening, remove the speaker from the mounting bracket and hold it in your hand. Test once more. If the buzz/rattle is still present, replace the speaker and proceed to step 6.

6. Apply a 35 mm (1-3/8 in) piece of 3M P/N 06375 foam tape over each of the 5 body slots Figure 2. Before applying, add a 20 mm (3/4 in) slit to the center of each foam piece Figure 3. This will allow quarter trim clip insertion through the foam strip.
7. Inspect the existing foam strips located on the upper/inner edge of the trim panel Figure 2. If these are crushed, apply 2 strips of 3M P/N 06375 foam tape over the existing foam on the panel.
8. Reinstall the rear quarter trim and verify that the buzz/rattle has been eliminated.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
