Keyless Entry Transmitter - Will Not Unlock Doors
NO: 23-38-97GROUP: Body
DATE: June 27, 1997
SUBJECT:
Keyless Entry Transmitter Diagnostics
MODELS:
1995 - 1997 (FJ) Avenger/Sebring/Talon
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Keyless entry transmitter(s) will not lock or unlock the doors.
DISCUSSION:
Many keyless entry transmitters have been returned and after testing have been found to operate within specifications. A large percentage were found to have dead batteries or no batteries. Once new batteries were installed, they operated within specification.
Following are some steps to follow before condemning a keyless transmitter:
1. Press each button on the transmitter. If the red indicator lamp illuminates when each button is pressed, the transmitter is functioning properly (Figure 1). Further system diagnostics will be required if the doors do not lock or unlock properly.
NOTE:
THE KEY FOB TRANSMITTER DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT IF THE INDICATOR LAMP ILLUMINATES WITH EACH BUTTON PRESS.
2. If the red indicator lamp does not illuminate when the buttons are pressed, check and replace the internal batteries as necessary. The new batteries should be installed with the positive (+) side down. Use battery model CR2016.
3. Check the transmitters function after battery replacement. If the indicator lamp does not illuminate with each button press, replace the transmitter. If the transmitter is replaced, it must be reprogrammed using the following instructions.
METHOD OF PROGRAMMING A KEYLESS TRANSMITTER
Since each transmitter has an individual code, it is necessary to program this code in the EEPROM of the control unit. This is necessary if the transmitter or control unit is replaced, or the cause of trouble is due to faulty code programming. Since two different codes (at the most) can be memorized, the old code will become unable to be used if the following programming operation is repeated twice.
NOTE:
ONLY PROGRAM A CODE AFTER CONFIRMING THAT THE ELECTRIC DOOR LOCK FUNCTION CAN BE WORKED THROUGH KEY OPERATION.
1. Close both doors.
2. Jumper pin # 1 to pin # 4 of the data link connector (Figure 3).
3. Turn the ignition switch to "ACC and return it to "OFF".
NOTE:
THIS LOCKS AND UNLOCKS THE DOORS ONCE, AND THEN A CODE CAN BE PROGRAMMED.
4. Press any button on the transmitter three times within 10 seconds to program transmitter 1.
5. After programming is complete7 the doors will be locked and unlocked once.
NOTE:
IF THERE ARE TWO TRANSMITTERS, THE SECOND TRANSMITTER CAN BE PROGRAMMED BY PRESSING ANY BUTTON ON THE SECOND TRANSMITTER 3 TIMES WITHIN 10 SECONDS. THIS WILL REGISTER THE SECOND CODE. THE SECOND TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING FUNCTION MUST BE PERFORMED WITHIN 60 SECONDS OF THE FIRST PROGRAMMING.
6. After the second programming is completed, the doors will be locked and unlocked once.
7. After the last programming is made, remove the jumper wire from the data link connector.
NOTE:
ONLY TWO TRANSMITTERS CAN BE PROGRAMMED.
8. Any of the following actions will cancel the programming process:
A. One minute has passed since the programming mode setting has begun.
B. Jumper between pin # 1 and # 4 of data link connector is disconnected.
C. Ignition switch is turned "0N".
D. Any of the doors are opened.
E. Ignition Key is removed.
