Transfer System

Transfer System

The 42LE transaxle uses a unique transfer chain and sprocket assembly to transfer power from the output shaft to the transfer shaft. The chain and sprockets eliminate the need to use transfer gears, as are used in other Chrysler applications. The output shaft is retained with a large nut which maintains the output shaft tapered roller bearing preload. The output sprocket is splined to match the output shaft and is retained to it with a snap ring. A selectable spacer is used between the nut and the sprocket to align the output sprocket height with the transfer sprocket height.

The transfer shaft is also retained with a large nut. Like the output shaft nut, the transfer shaft nut is responsible for maintaining transfer shaft tapered roller bearing preload. The transfer sprocket is splined to the transfer shaft and is also retained with a large nut. Like the output shaft nut, the transfer shaft nut is responsible for maintaining transfer shaft tapered roller bearing preload. The transfer sprocket is splined to the transfer shaft and is also retained with a snap ring. The transfer chain connects the two sprockets together and uses a chain snubber to prevent chain oscillations or vibrations.
