Steering Wheel - Creaking/Clicking Noise

MODELS:
1993 - 1995 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Creaking or clicking noise from steering wheel area when pushing or pulling on the steering wheel, usually when entering or exiting the vehicle.

DIAGNOSIS:

Push or pull on the steering wheel rim without turning the wheel. Do not use excessive force. If a creaking or clicking noise is heard, perform the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4874017 Tape Kit, Insulating (contains four pads)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing four tape insulating pads between the driver airbag module and the steering wheel.

1. Record all radio station presets, disconnect and isolate the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the screws holding the speed control switches (two screws each) and move the switches out of the way.

3. Remove the two bolts attaching the air bag module to the steering wheel.





4. Lift the airbag module out far enough to install four tape insulating pads, P/N 4874017, to the contact points between the airbag module and the steering wheel, as indicated.

5. Install the airbag module, checking that the wires are not pinched.

NOTE:
CHECK TO MAKE SURE AIRBAG CONNECTOR IS FULLY SEATED IN AIRBAG MODULE.

6. Install the two airbag attaching bolts and torque to 9 to 11 Nm (80 to 100 in.lbs.).

7. Install the speed control switches.

8. Do not connect negative battery cable. Refer to Airbag System Check on page 8M-3 of the 1995 New Yorker, LHS, Concorde, Intrepid, and Vision Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-5140).

9. Set radio station presets and clock.
