Steering Column Overhaul

Fig.7 Exploded View Of Steering Column Assembly:

This steering column has been designed to be serviced as an assembly except for wiring, switches, shrouds and steering wheel. Also, most steering column components can be serviced without removing the column from the vehicle. The only other serviceable components are as follows:
1. On models equipped with column shift, replace gear shift lever assembly as follows:
a. Remove gear shift cable from retaining pin on gear shift assembly, then unlock shift cable adjuster.
b. Remove three Torx head screws retaining shifter assembly to tilt housing.
c. Remove shifter assembly from tilt housing and unhook interlock cable from shifter assembly.
d. Remove and discard interlock cassette from steering column.
e. Reverse procedure to install.

2. On all models, replace steering column jacket bushing assembly as follows:
a. Remove steering column as outlined under "Steering Column, Replace."
b. Remove steering coupler from steering shaft by removing spring pin from coupler and sliding coupler of end or steering shaft. Steering column shaft must be supported during removal of spring pin.
c. Separate steering column bracket from jacket bushing, by depressing retaining tabs on bushing and lifting bracket off bushing.
d. Using a pin punch lightly tap jacket bushing off end of steering column jacket and steering shaft.
e. Reverse procedure to install, use arbor press and installer tool No. MB-990800, or equivalent, to install bushing. Ensure three retaining tabs are expanded out past edge of lower bracket.
