Defrost Ducts - Do Not Defrost The Bottom Of Windshield

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE DEC. 1, 1994 (MDH 12-11-XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The bottom portion of the windshield does not defrost when subjected to temperatures below 30°F and/or with snow/ice buildup on the bottom portion of the windshield.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4814040 I/P Plenum Pad
1 4758823 I/P Top Cover Assembly, with ATC
1 4758824 I/P Top Cover Assembly, without ATC
AR 4746277 Foam Strips, 1993 M.Y. Only

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the I/P top cover and plenum pad and modifying the defrost ducts (defrost duct modification on 1993 models).

1. Record radio presets, disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.

2. Remove right and left instrument panel end caps held in place by a series of clips.

3. Remove right and left interior kick panels.

4. Remove right side bezel from instrument panel.

5. Remove center instrument panel bezel held in place by four clips.

6. Remove center console from vehicle (if equipped)

7. Lower the glove box assembly by pressing in on the sides of the glove box. Remove four air bag screws located behind glove box and close glove box.

8. Remove lower bolster retaining screws, disconnect trunk release and glove box light wiring, and remove bolster.

9. Remove the instrument panel top cover by carefully prying up until retaining clips are disengaged.

10. Remove right and left windshield "A" pillar trim covers.

11. Remove five bolts located at the base of the windshield that hold instrument panel to the cowl.

12. Disconnect the scan tool (DRB III) connector from brace.

13. Remove instrument panel ground strap, located on the lower left side of the center console.

14. Remove under column duct and left floor duct.

15. Disconnect 60-way wiring connector on the left side and all related connectors.

16. Remove steering column covers from steering column

17. Remove steering column retaining bolts and allow steering column to lower to floor.

18. Remove wiring from steering column.

19. Remove center instrument panel retaining bolt at center console bracket.

20. Remove right side floor air duct.

21. Disconnect 10-way connector, blower module connector, blower motor connector, and Airbag Control Module (ACM) connector at center wiring.

22. Remove Body Control Module (BCM) attaching bolt from instrument panel, and let hang to floor.

23. Disconnect right side wiring connector and antenna connector.

24. Remove right and left side upper instrument panel mounting screws located in door jamb. Proceed to step 28 for 1994 and 1995 model year vehicles.

STEPS 25 THRU 27 APPLY TO 1993 M.Y. ONLY

25. Remove the instrument panel assembly from the vehicle and stuff the upper defroster ducts with shop towels.





26. Modify instrument panel defrost duct by cutting a rectangular slot, 14 mm by 40 mm, in each duct as shown in the drawing (rectangular slots must line up with holes in plenum pad).

27. If foam strips are not in place at top of defrost duct, install four foam strips, P/N 4746277 (TSB 24-03-93 Rev. A).

28. Install revised plenum pad, P/N 4814040.

29. Reverse above procedure to reassemble instrument panel. Install revised top cover assembly, P/N 4758823 (W ATC) or P/N 4758824 (W/O ATC).

30. Connect negative battery cable and reset previously recorded radio stations and clock.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
