On-Board Diagnostics

FAULT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
Faults detected by the Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) come under four categories: Locked, Latching, Non-Latching, or Non-Erasable.

Locked Fault

If a diagnostic trouble code is locked, the anti-lock and traction control warning lamp will be on and remain on until the diagnostic trouble code has been erased from the CAB memory using a DRB II.

Latched Fault

If a diagnostic trouble code is latched, the anti-lock and traction control warning lamp will come on and remain on until the next ignition reset, even if the diagnostic trouble code has disappeared.

Non-Latching Fault

If a diagnostic trouble code is non-latched, the anti-lock and traction control warning lamp will come on as long as the fault exists. As soon as the fault condition goes away, the warning lamps are turned off, but the diagnostic trouble code will be stored.

Non-Erasable Fault

This type of fault cannot be erased with a DRB II tester or by cycling the ignition switch, the anti-lock and traction warning lamps will stay ON until system operation is restored by replacing defective components.

WARNING LAMP SYSTEMS

Anti-Lock Warning Lamp
The amber anti-lock warning lamp is located in the message center. The lamp warns the driver that ABS functions have been shutdown. The warning lamp is controlled by the CAB or main relay through an in harness diode.

Brake Warning Lamp
The red brake warning lamp is located in the instrument panel. Applying the parking brake, or low master cylinder fluid level will activate the lamp.

The CAB will also activate the warning lamp if there is a fault in the ABS system, and the amber anti-lock lamp fails to activate.

Traction Control Function Lamp
The green traction control function lamp is located in the message center. It informs the driver that system has entered traction control mode. The lamp is controlled by the CAB.

Traction Control Warning Lamp
The amber traction control warning lamp is located in the message center. It will inform the driver that the traction control function has been turned Off by the CAB. The lamp will also come On when the traction control switch is turned Off with the ignition On.

Normal Operation of Warning Lamp
When the engine is in the crank position the red brake warning lamp will be On, once engine is started the amber anti-lock and traction control lamp will come On for one to two seconds then go Off. Verification of system is then complete.
