NO: 23-13-95GROUP: Body
DATE: Mar. 31, 1995
SUBJECT:
Sunshade Effort/Rattles
MODELS:
1995 (FJ) Talon
Note
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO NOV. 30, 1994 (MDH 11-30-XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Sunshade high operating effort and/or rattling noise.
DIAGNOSIS:
Verify customer complaint of high sunshade effort or noise. If noise is the complaint, determine when the noise occurs (open position, during opening, during closing).
PARTS REQUIRED:
Note
Some of these parts may not be required. See specific procedures for application.
1 MR217022 Slide Block Kit
1 4773968 Adhesive Backed Flocking (10 mm X 4")
A/P NPN Closed Cell Foam Tape (3/4" X 7/16") Kent P/N 40140 or Equivalent
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves two separate procedures. Procedure "A" addresses high effort repairs, and procedure "B" addresses rattles (noise) repairs.
A. If high sunshade effort is experienced, the following steps can be performed.
1. Verify that the sunroof opening trim is properly installed. Slide off a portion of the trim and inspect the installation. The trim should be installed with the ribbed side facing the passenger compartment. The trim should be seated over the headliner and sunroof housing. Make sure it is not seated over the slide rails. Reinstall the trim if it is not installed properly.
2. Verify that the sunshade is installed correctly.
Remove the sunroof glass and inspect the front sunshade side tabs to ensure they are not cracked or broken. If the tabs are broken, replace the front shade (Figure 1).
Remove and reinstall the front and rear shade, making sure the slide blocks are properly installed in the slide rails.
If excessive effort is still present, the sun roof housing can be relieved to allow more clearance for the sunshade. Insert hands between the sunshade tray and the sunshade at the rear center of the assembly. Pull down slightly to relieve the housing.
CAUTION
EXCESSIVE BENDING MAY CAUSE LIGHT BLEED OR TOO LITTLE EFFORT RESULTING IN IMPROPER SUNSHADE OPERATION.
B. If sunshade rattles are experienced, the following steps can be performed.
Note
THE SUNROOF GLASS MUST BE REMOVED FOR THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.
1. If the rattle is coming from the back part of the sunshade (usually in open position) it is either the slide block rattling in the slide rail or the slide block rattling in its housing. Either rattle can be eliminated by replacing the right rear slide block on the rear shade with slide block kit, P/N MR217022 (Figure 2).
2. If a clunk sound is heard when closing the sunshade, foam pads can be installed on the front edge of the front shade.
Cut two pads 3/4" long from closed cell foam tape (3/4" X 7/16"), Kent P/N 40140, or equivalent. Stick the pads to the face of the front rib (approximately 330 mm (13") from center to center). Make sure the pads are even with the top edge of the rib (Figure 3).
3. If a metallic clunk is heard when opening and closing the sunshade/sunroof, it is the rear shade hitting the sunroof drip channel or the drip channel contacting the roof inner panel. Check the tightness of the drip channel screws. If they are loose, tighten them and recheck for a metallic clunk. If the screws are tight or noise persists after tightening, place 2 Strips of the adhesive backed flocking, P/N 4773968, to two of the ribs on the rear shade (Figure 4). Place each piece of flocking over the rib, extending slightly past the rear edge. Press the flocking down over each rib so it is firmly attached.
Test operation. If noise still occurs, flocking can be added to the back side of the drip channel. Mark the 4 slide rail positions on the drip channel (Figure 5). Remove drip channel and apply adhesive backed flocking, P/N 4773968, to the width of the channel where the slide rails pass.
Prior to reinstalling the drip channel, bend the first 15 mm (5/8") of both rear edges down to within 5 mm (13/64") of the channel base (Figure 6). This will eliminate the channel from contacting the roof inner.
