Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

Fuel Filter Components:






Removal
1. Reduce the internal pressure of the fuel pipes and hoses by completing the following operations:
a. Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector.
b. Start and run the engine until it stalls, then turn the ignition switch to OFF.
c. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
d. Connect the fuel pump harness connector.






2. Remove the eye bolt while holding the fuel filter nut securely.






3. Remove the flare nut while holding the fuel filter nut securely.

Caution: Cover with a shop towel to avoid gasoline from splashing.

4. Remove the cross member, remove fuel filter mounting clamp bolt, and then remove the fuel filter from the clamp.

Note: Be careful not to lose the flat washers. These washers function as gaskets and must be present on re-assembly to prevent leaks.

Inspection
- Check the hose and pipes for cracks, bend, deformation and clogging.
- Check the evaporative emission canister for clogging.
- Check the fuel filter for clogging and damage.

Installation
1. When installing the fuel filter, first temporarily install the filter to the filter bracket; then insert the main pipe at the connector part of the filter, and manually screw in the main pipe flare nut.
2. Holding the fuel filter nut, tighten the fuel main pipe flare nut to 22 - 29 ft lb (30 - 40 Nm).
3. Holding the fuel filter nut, tighten the eye bolt to 18 - 25 ft lb (25 - 35 Nm). Then tighten the filter to the bracket.
4. After replacing the fuel filter, check for fuel leaks with the system pressurized (ignition key ON).
