Rear Brakes - Squeak/Squeal on Application

NO.: 05-19-93

GROUP: Brakes

DATE: Dec. 17, 1993

SUBJECT:
Rear Brake Squeak

MODELS:

1992 - 1994 (BD) Laser/Talon

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A squeal or squeak may be heard from the rear brake assembly on brake application.

DISCUSSION:

A shim kit is available to correct rear brake squeak on both FWD and AWD models. The shim kit contains four rubber coated slotted shims, four stainless steel shims, and a grease packet.

DIAGNOSIS:

Vehicles manufactured after VIN sequence (PE098227 - 2WD) and (PE101071 - AWD) have the shims installed as original equipment. Vehicles built prior to this sequence are eligible for this bulletin. Drive the vehicle to determine if the squeak is rear brake related. If the noise originates from the rear on brake application, perform the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

The shim kit is to be used with the pad kit part numbers only, (Note: Superseded pad kits will include the new shims.):

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

The repair includes replacing the pads (if necessary), discarding the shims that accompany the brake pad kit, and installing the shim kit per the directions below.

1. Remove the rear brake pads and determine if they require replacement. This shim kit may be added to vehicles where a recent pad change has been performed.

2. Discard the shims supplied in the brake pad kit (listed kits only), or discard the old shims from the original pads.

3. Install shim kit part number MR128416 to both inner and outer pads as shown in Figure 1. The slotted shim is placed against the brake pad backing plate (tabs up), and the stainless steel shim is placed on top of the coated shim (tabs down). Apply a small amount of grease between the pad backing plate and slotted shim, and again between the slotted shim and stainless steel shim.

4. Re-assemble the rear brakes and road test the vehicle to verify squeak elimination.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
