41TE (A604)
Neutral Safety Switch
Circuit Miss-wired to Correct a No-start Condition

When a malfunction of the NSS prevents the starter from operating, some technicians have been known to add a ground to the starter relay terminal to allow starting the engine in any gear. While this will allow the engine to be started, it also sends erroneous information to the 41TE controller regarding shifter position information, causing a shift pattern malfunction in the forward ranges (as a result of the NSS circuit having a full time ground to TOM pin # 41).

To test for this condition, check to see if the starter operates in all gear positions. If so, the starter relay has a full-time ground circuit. Correct the problem with the NSS circuit, then disconnect this ground.
