Transmission Buzz or Rattle Noise

MODELS:

1993 - 1994 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Buzz or rattle (tinny/metallic sound) short in duration, typically in the 10 to 15 MPH range on moderate acceleration which gets louder as the vehicle warms up to operating temperature. The sound can only be heard while the vehicle is moving straight ahead or in a right turn. It is not present while the vehicle is in a left turn.

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Road test the vehicle at normal operating temperatures for the condition by starting from a complete stop in overdrive gearshift position.

2. Moderately accelerate the vehicle and listen for the sound while traveling between 10 and 15 MPH.

3. Repeat this while making a turn to the right.

4. Repeat again while making a left turn. If the sound is heard in the straight forward and right turn maneuvers and not heard while making a left turn, proceed with the following repair.

5. If the sound is heard while making a left turn, follow the procedures listed in the appropriate Service Manual (Group 21) Transaxle under Diagnosis Guide - Abnormal Noise and repair as required.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 4778989 Kit - Transfer Chain Snubber
Consists of:
1 4659187 Transfer Chain Snubber
2 6503931 Screw - Chain Snubber Attaching (pilot point)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the transfer chain snubber and attaching screws.

1. Follow the proper procedures and remove the exhaust system.

2. Place a transmission jack under the transaxle and raise the transaxle slightly to relieve the weight on the rear transaxle mount.

3. Remove the transaxle mount through-bolt.

4. Remove the four rear crossmember mounting bolts.

5. Remove the four mounting bolts of the transaxle mount.

6. Lower the transaxle slightly and remove the rear crossmember.

7. Remove the transaxle rear cover.





8. Remove the transfer chain snubber and screws and replace them with the parts listed in the Transfer Chain Snubber Kit. Tighten the snubber screws to 5 N-m (40 in.lbs.).

NOTE:
DISREGARD THE SNUBBER GAP MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE. IT IS NOT REQUIRED WITH THE NEW RUBBER FACED SNUBBER.

9. Install the transmission rear cover. Tighten the attaching screws to 29 N-m (250 in.lbs.).

10. Install the removed components in reverse order.

11. Fill and adjust the transmission fluid level following the proper procedures.
