Radio - Static or Popping Noise on AM Band

NO: 08-44-94

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Aug. 19, 1994

SUBJECT:
Distant AM Radio Static

MODELS:

1993 - 1994 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Static or ignition noise (repetitive popping noise varying with engine speed) on the AM radio band. This condition is more prevalent on distant AM radio stations.

NOTE:
VEHICLES EXHIBITING THIS CONDITION SHOULD HAVE TSB 08-04-93 PERFORMED. IF CONDITION PERSISTS PERFORM THIS REPAIR PROCEDURE.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installation of a supplemental engine suppression strap to the left side of the engine.

3.5L ENGINE

1. Disconnect the battery. Locate the empty screw attaching boss on the outboard side of the left cylinder head.

2. Clean (lightly sand) any oxidation or contamination off the attaching boss. Use care in keeping all surfaces clean during installation.

3. Attach the larger diameter terminal of the suppression strap, P/N 4760457, to the cylinder head attaching boss using the larger grounding screw, P/N 6101944. Torque to 100 in.lbs.

NOTE:
THE CONDUCTIVE FINISH OF THE GROUNDING SCREW IS CRITICAL TO ENSURE PROPER CONDUCTIVITY. ALLOW THE TERMINAL TO ROTATE SLIGHTLY TO PROVIDE METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT BETWEEN THE GROUNDING TERMINAL AND CYLINDER HEAD.

4. Route the end of the strap with the smaller diameter hole toward the underside of the left frame rail using care not to touch any vehicle components (static and dynamic), especially electrical wiring, exhaust, and driveline components.

5. From underside of vehicle, locate and drill a 13/64 in. diameter hole on the underside of the left frame rail in the same location as the existing (right side) engine suppression strap. May have to remove splash shield clip for drilling access.

6. Attach the smaller diameter terminal of the suppression strap to the frame rail with the smaller grounding screw, P/N 154554. Torque to 35 in.lbs.

NOTE:
THE CONDUCTIVE FINISH OF THE GROUNDING SCREW IS CRITICAL TO ENSURING PROPER CONDUCTIVITY. ALLOW THE TERMINAL TO ROTATE SLIGHTLY TO LOCALLY BITE THROUGH PAINT AND E-COATING TO PROVIDE METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT BETWEEN THE GROUNDING TERMINAL AND FRAME.

7. Reinstall splash shield.

8. Reconnect the battery and test system.

3.3L ENGINE

1. Disconnect the battery. Locate the empty screw attaching boss on the outboard side of the left engine block below the starter.

2. Clean (lightly sand) any oxidation or contamination off the attaching boss. Use care in keeping all surfaces clean during installation.

3. Attach the larger diameter terminal of the twin suppression strap, P/N 4760459, (where the two braids are crimped together) to the engine block attaching boss using the larger grounding screw, P/N 6101944. Torque to 100 in.lbs.

NOTE:
THE CONDUCTIVE FINISH OF THE GROUNDING SCREW IS CRITICAL TO ENSURING PROPER CONDUCTIVITY. ALLOW THE TERMINAL TO ROTATE SLIGHTLY TO PROVIDE METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT BETWEEN THE GROUNDING TERMINAL AND ENGINE BLOCK.

4. Route the braid of the twin strap with the smaller diameter hole toward the underside of the left frame rail using care not to touch any vehicle components (static and dynamic), especially electrical wiring, exhaust, and driveline components.

ALLOW THE TERMINAL TO ROTATE SLIGHTLY TO LOCALLY BITE THROUGH PAINT AND ECOATING TO PROVIDE METAL-TO-METAL CONTACT BETWEEN THE GROUNDING TERMINAL AND FRAME.

7. Reinstall splash shield.

8. Route braid of the twin strap with larger diameter terminal toward existing left rear cylinder head wiring ground.

9. Remove wiring ground screw and add the supplemental engine strap terminal to the existing ground location. Be sure to retain all existing ground terminals upon reattachment of the existing ground screw. Ensure all surfaces are clean and free of oxidation and contaminants.

10. Reattach left cylinder head grounding screw. Torque to 300 in.lbs.

12. Reconnect the battery and test the system.
