SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicles may exhibit a rattle during engine start-up and/or shut-down. The rattle lasts for approximately one second. The presence of the noise is not dependent on engine or air temperatures.
DIAGNOSIS:
Raise vehicle on hoist and make sure all front and rear engine support fasteners are tightened to specifications. Also, make sure all exhaust system fasteners are tightened to specifications. Make sure the exhaust system components are not contacting the underbody or engine cradle. If the vehicle still exhibits a rattle when the engine is started and/or when it is shut down, use a stethoscope to listen to the front engine mounts as the noise occurs. If the noise is coming from the engine mounts, proceed with the repair procedure. The front engine mounts should be replaced in pairs only.
