FLOOR SHIFT INTERLOCK SERVICE
The interlock cable slides into the lock housing behind the lock cylinder and attaches to the floor mounted shifter. The floor shift interlock system is adjusted by a nut at the shifter.
Removal
1. Disarm airbag as outlined under "Precautions."
2. Remove shifter handle.
3. Remove bezel from shifter console and drivers side kick panel center console.
4. Remove tilt lever then upper and lower column covers.
5. Loosen nut on interlock adjustment lever.
6. Move ignition key to Run position.
7. Remove interlock cable from shifter housing by sliding cable out of groove in interlock lever.
8. Depress lock tab on interlock cable and remove cable from lock cylinder housing.
Installation
1. Place ignition switch in On position.
2. Route interlock cable as follows:
a. Route cable down steering column, past air distribution duct.
b. Route cable between support strut and airbag module mounting bracket then down to the shifter housing.
3. Slide interlock cable into lock cylinder housing until it snaps into place.
4. Turn ignition lock to Off/Lock position.
5. Put shifter into Park position.
6. Slide interlock cable core wire into groove on adjustment lever. Ensure cable end seats into groove.
7. Slip cable into housing until it snaps into place.
8. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder.
9. Loosen adjustment nut and allow cable to adjust itself to correct position then tighten adjustment nut.
10. Inspect interlock cable as follows:
a. With lock cylinder in Off position and ignition key removed, cable core wire should not move when pulled.
b. With lock cylinder in Run position, cable core wire should slide freely when pulled. Also, cable should return to the bottomed out position when released.
11. Inspect interlock cable adjustment as follows:
a. With ignition lock in Off position, shifter should be locked in the Park position.
b. Without starting engine, place ignition switch in the Run position. Move shifter to the reverse position. Ignition key should not be able to be removed from lock cylinder.
c. Place shifter into Park position and turn ignition key to Off position. Ignition key should be able to be removed from the lock cylinder.
d. If shifter and ignition key does not perform as described in steps a through c, repeat adjustment procedure.
12. Install shifter console bezel, shifter handle, kick panel, tilt lever and upper and lower steering column covers.
13. Rearm airbag as outlined under "Precautions."
