Fuel Pump - Hard Start/Long Cranking Times

NO.:
14-07-92

GROUP:
Fuel

DATE:
Nov.16, 1992

SUBJECT:
Hard Start/Long Crank Times

MODELS:

1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may experience hard starting/long crank times (over five seconds, more evident with a warm/hot engine). This condition can be caused by the loss of fuel pressure after the engine has been turned off, if no other engine performance symptoms are present.

DIAGNOSIS:

Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail service valve, as outlined in the 1993 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual, and confirm the immediate loss of fuel system pressure after the engine has been turned off. If fuel pressure does not drop off, proceed with normal diagnostic procedures.

If fuel pressure does drop off after the engine is shut off, disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel rail. Attach a "fuel approved" temporary rubber hose to the rail and position the other end of the hose into an approved fuel container. Start vehicle to obtain system operating pressure, as described in the service manual. At the same time the engine is turned off, completely pinch off (vise grip tool is acceptable) the temporary return line hose. Notice the fuel pressure gauge reading. If the system pressure does not hold, the fuel pump check valve is leaking. Proceed with the repair procedure.

WARNING:
DO NOT PINCH OFF THE RETURN LINE HOSE WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.

If the system pressure is holding with the temporary return hose pinch in place, but drops off as the pinch on the temporary return hose is released, the regulator and/or O-rings are leaking. Repair as necessary, following service manual procedures.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Pump Package 4723358

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

Replace the fuel pump as outlined in the 1993 Concorde, Intrepid, Vision Service Manual, Publication No. 81-270-3140.

NOTE:
WHEN REMOVING THE TRUNK LINER, THERE IS A RUBBER LOOP SECURING THE TOP OF THE LINER TO THE SHEET METAL BEHIND THE SEAT. THIS LOOP MUST BE CUT OR BROKEN TO REMOVE THE LINER. TO SECURE THE LINER AFTER THE VEHICLE IS REPAIRED, USE TWO SELF-TAPPING SHEET METAL SCREWS, EIGHT INCHES EACH WAY OF CENTER NEAR THE TOP FRONT EDGE OF THE LINER.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
