Heater and A/C - Wind Noise In RECIRC Mode

NO.: 24-01-93
GROUP: Air Conditioning
DATE: Jan. 13, 1993

SUBJECT:
Wind Noise in Recirculation Mode

MODELS:

1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

When operating in RECIRC mode some vehicles built prior to August 19, 1992, (MDH 08-19-XX) may exhibit wind noise at the right hand base of the windshield. This noise will increase in intensity as vehicle speed increases.

DIAGNOSIS:

The vehicle must be driven at the speed at which the customer detected the noise. While at that speed, place the HVAC controls in LOW blower, PANEL mode, OUTSIDE AIR. Listen carefully for wind noise at the lower-right base of the windshield. Switch the controls to PANEL mode, RECIRC. If wind noise immediately becomes evident, proceed to the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Recirculation Door Assembly 4644019

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves installing a revised recirculation door assembly incorporating a thicker foam seal.

1. First place the HVAC controls to a RECIRC position. This allows evaluation of the door seal before and after service.

2. Remove HVAC assembly per 1993 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual instructions.

3. Observe how well (or poorly) the existing recirculation door foam seal seats against the RECIRC housing flange. A poor seal is indicated by a gap between the door seal and flange. (NOTE: THE HVAC MUST HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE RECIRC POSITION PRIOR TO REMOVAL TO PERFORM THIS EVALUATION).

4. Remove Recirculation Door Housing fasteners (4 retaining screws, 1 clip). To gain access to the right most retaining screw, it is necessary to first remove the RECIRC actuator. Separate the Recirculation door housing from the HVAC assembly.

5. To remove the door from its housing, it is necessary to disengage the retaining bearings at both ends of the door shaft. Using a flat screwdriver, carefully pry the right retaining bearing (actuator-side of housing) from its socket. Note that this bearing is keyed to prevent mis-assembly. With the first bearing removed, firmly grasp the door and push toward the opposite end to remove the second retainer.

6. Install new door and re-assemble the RECIRC housing. Ensure that the new door effectively corrects the gap condition noted in Step 3.

7. Fasten the RECIRC housing to the HVAC assembly and re-install the HVAC per 1993 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual instructions.

8. Perform HVAC calibration procedure per 1993 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual instructions.

9. Road test the vehicle to ensure that condition has been eliminated.
