B. Replace Door Check Strap and Install Trim Panel

B1. Before installing new check straps, make sure arm is fully extended to ease assembly. If arm is not fully extended, use a vise to seat body with rubber bumper and end plate against arm stop pin as shown in Figure 6.

B2. While holding trim panel away from door, reach in door access hole and install new check strap. Loosely start two bolts so that check strap arm can be installed over hinge pin (Figure 1).

Note:
Refer to Figure 6 to make sure the correct check strap is used at each location. Door check straps are interchangeable from one location to another.

B3. Slide the check strap arm onto the door hinge pin and press firmly into place using large jaw slip-joint pliers by placing one jaw of pliers on the check strap arm and the other against the top surface of the hinge. To prevent pliers from bottoming on hinge pin, tape a spacer such as a 5/16" thick nut with an I.D. of 3/8" to the lower plier jaw. Tape the upper plier jaw to prevent damaging paint on hinge (Figure 7).

Caution:
The check strap bushing-to-door hinge pin fit is designed to be tight. Make sure the arm bushing is in-line with the hinge pin before pressing it into place or damage to the bushing will result. A damaged bushing will cause noise when opening or closing the door.

B4. Install two new retainer clips onto the hinge pin and seat both clips firmly against the check strap arm using large jaw slip-joint pliers with the 5/16" nut attached (Figure 7).

Note:
The front door hinge pin length on early built vehicles is slightly shorter (0.5 mm) than those on later built vehicles. As a result, one retainer clip must lock into the hinge pin groove on early built vehicles with the second clip pressed firmly beneath. Both retainer clips must lock into the hinge pin groove on later models.

B5. Tighten both bolts holding check strap to door end frame securely.

B6. While holding trim panel away from door, insert latch rod into latch release handle clip and engage clip to hold rod onto handle (Figure 5).

B7. Engage trim panel hook retainers at the bottom of the trim panel into the holes in door and engage top of trim panel onto channel retainer at top of door (Figure 4).

B8. Install two upper outboard screws (and lower rear screw on rear doors) that hold trim panel to door.

B9. Install screw that holds trim panel to door behind inside latch handle (Figure 3).

B10. Install pull cup into arm rest on trim panel and install screw (Figure 3).

Note:
Install pull cup so that high side faces outboard when viewed from the end.

B11. Front Doors Only: Install screws that hold trim panel to door inside speaker opening, and install speaker grille (Figure 3).

B12. Install window crank, if equipped.

REPEAT PROCEDURES A and B TO INSTALL NEW CHECK STRAPS ON REMAINING THREE DOORS.
