Body/Frame - Unacceptable Road Noise To Interior

NO.: 23-30-93

GROUP: Body

DATE: May 14, 1993

SUBJECT:
Road Noise Reduction

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 23-35-92 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE EFFECTIVE DATES HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND A UNIQUE PROCEDURE ADDED FOR '94 VEHICLES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**

MODELS:

1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

**1994 (LH) LHS/New Yorker**

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

** Some vehicles may exhibit unacceptable road noise from the front wheels. In addition, some vehicles built before 4/1/93 (MDH 04-01-XX) 1994 model year, and 4/14/93 (MDH 04-14-XX) 1993 model year may exhibit unacceptable road noise from the rear seat.**

DIAGNOSIS:

**Verify that the tires are inflated to the pressure shown on the tire placard. The tire pressure has been reduced from 35 PSI to 32 PSI on 1993 Ride Tuned (sales code SDA) and Touring Tuned (sales code SDC) vehicles. This revised tire pressure will reduce road noise. Road test the vehicle to determine if the noise is more noticeable from the front or rear seat. Perform the repair procedure as needed.**

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR Household Aerosol Foam Sealer/Insulation NPN

AR Clear Plastic Extension Tubing NPN

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves filling the front upper load beam and/or the C-Pillar with foam sealer/insulation.

Road Noise Audible From Front Seat

** 1993 and 1994 Model Year Vehicles **

1. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.

2. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.

3. Remove the two rear-most screws from the plastic wheelhouse splash shield and pull the shield down to allow access to the upper load beam.

4. Remove the upper load beam "stuffer bag" through the access hole (if present).

5. Fill the load beam cavity using household aerosol foam sealer/insulation. It will be necessary to add an extension (12" to 18") to the application tube supplied with the foam sealer to reach into the cavity. Clear plastic tubing of the appropriate size works well for this.

6. Install the front wheelhouse splash shields.

7. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.

Road Noise Audible From Rear Seat

** 1993 Model Year Vehicles Built Before 4/14/93 (MDH 04-14-XX)**

1. Remove interior C-Pillar garnish molding.

2. Cover rear shelf, rear seat back, and cushion with masking paper or a plastic sheet to protect them from the foam sealer/insulation.

3. Fill lower two C-Pillar garnish attachment cavities using household aerosol foam sealer/insulation. It will be necessary to add an extension (12" to 18") to the application tube supplied with the foam sealer to reach down into the cavity. Clear plastic tubing of the appropriate size works well for this.

4. Install the C-Pillar garnish moldings.

** 1994 Model Year Vehicles Built Before 4/11/93 (MDH 04-01-XX) **

1. Remove interior C-Pillar garnish molding.

2. Remove rear seat cushion and back.

3. Remove lower quarter trim.

4. Cover the carpet and any exposed trim with masking paper or a plastic sheet to protect them from the foam sealer/insulation.

5. Fill the lower quarter (dog-leg) through the trim panel locating hole using household aerosol foam sealer/insulation. It will be necessary to add an extension (12" to 18") to the application tube supplied with the foam sealer to reach into this cavity. Clear plastic tubing of the appropriate size works well for this.

6. Allow to dry for 1 hour.

7. Replace the trim panels and seat assemblies.
