Free Running Test
1. Place starter motor assembly in a soft jawed vise.
2. Connect a fully charged battery to starter motor as follows:
a. Connect a test voltmeter (100 ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat in series with battery positive post and starter motor terminal.
b. Connect a voltmeter (15 volt scale) across starter motor.
c. Rotate carbon pile to full resistance position.
d. Connect battery ground cable to starter body.
3. Adjust rheostat until battery voltage shown by voltmeter is voltage shown in "Specification" chart.
4. Confirm amperage is within specifications shown in "Specification" chart and starter motor turns smoothly and freely.
Return Test Of Magnetic Switch
1. Disconnect field coil wire from terminal M from magnetic switch.
2. Connect a 12 volt battery between terminals M and starter body. This test must be performed quickly to prevent coil from burning.
3. Pull pinion out and release.
4. If pinion quickly returns to original position, switch is operating correctly.
5. If pinion does not quickly return to original position, replace magnetic switch.
