Body Side Cladding - Interference With Front Fenders
NO.: 23-37-92GROUP: Body
DATE: Dec. 14, 1992
SUBJECT:
Lower Body Side Cladding Interference With Front Fenders
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LOWER BODY SIDE CLADDING.
MODELS:
1992 (BD) Talon
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicles equipped with lower body side cladding may experience an interference condition, where the front edge of the door side cladding does not have sufficient clearance to the front fender when the door is opened. This condition may cause body side molding damage and/or damage to the rear edge of the front fender.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the front edge of the front door cladding to determine if the adhesive is holding the cladding firmly to the door. Open the front door and check the minimum clearance between the front door cladding and front fender. The minimum clearance should be 3 mm (1/8") when checked at an ambient temperature of 75~ F (24~ C), as illustrated. If the lower body side cladding is loose, or the clearance is less than 3 mm (1/8"), or damage to the rear edge of the front fender has occurred, proceed with the repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves repairing loose lower body side cladding, and or obtaining proper clearance between the door cladding and the fender.
LOOSE LOWER BODY SIDE CLADDING:
1. Pull the lower body side cladding outward and clean thoroughly (using 3M General Purpose Cleaner (3M Part No. 08984) or equivalent, any foreign material accumulation that may have occurred.
2. Apply 3M Primerless Superfast Urethane (3M Part No. 08609) or equivalent, to the leading edge of the cladding mastic and hold firmly in place until the urethane sets. The temperature of the cladding should be a minimum of 80~F (27~C). Preheating with a heat gun or heat lamp will assist with the repair. For best adhesion of the urethane, the vehicle should remain at room temperature for 24 hours.
3. Repeat this procedure on other side of vehicle, if necessary.
DOOR CLADDING TO FENDER CLEARANCE:
1. Open the door to the widest clearance.
2. Have an assistant hold the door in that position. Using both hands, insert the tip of your fingers (or a nylon pry stick) at the center of the rear edge of the fender and firmly pull out on the fender. Do not jerk or pry with a hard object or pry bar as this may cause damage to the paint or sheet metal. Repeat if necessary until proper clearance of 3 mm (1/8") has been obtained.
3. Repeat this procedure on other side of vehicle, if necessary.
If damage to the fender has occurred, repair as necessary.
