Mitsubishi starters are either direct drive or gear reduction type. A direct drive starter motor with overrunning clutch type. A solenoid switch is mounted on the starter motor.

A gear reduction starter motor utilizes a planetary gear assembly to obtain higher rotational speeds with the same torque output.
