Test 1 - Crank Angle Sensor Testing
CRANK ANGLE SENSOR TESTINGCrank Angle And Top Dead Center Sensor:
Crank Angle And Top Dead Center Sensor Connector:
CAUTION: Disconnect and ground all spark plug wires to prevent engine from starting and damage to coils and other electrical components.
NOTE: Before checking electrical operation of the Crank Angle sensor in a no START condition check ensure that Crank Angle/TDC sensor assembly shaft rotates (indicating timing belt is okay).
1. Using a high impedance analog voltmeter, check the Crank Angle sensor output signal. Connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good ground and the positive end to terminal 4 of the Crank Angle/TDC sensor connector. Check voltmeter while cranking engine. If the voltmeter reads at 5v, go to step 2 below. If the voltmeter reads at 0v during cranking go to step 3 below. If fluctuated between 1.5-2.0v, sensor is okay, check ignition coil.
2. Check terminal 2 of the connector for battery voltage. If battery voltage is found see step 3 below. If no battery voltage is found check sensor power and ground circuits as directed below.
a. Check for open/shorted wiring between ignition switch and Crank Angle/TDC sensor connector.
b. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and connect an ohmmeter between ground and terminal 1 of the Crank Angle/TDC sensor connector.
c. If there is no continuity repair the open in the wire between Crank Angle/TDC sensor connector and ground.
d. If there is continuity see step 4 below.
e. Check pin condition of the crank angle sensor connector and repair if necessary. If connector is okay replace Crank Angle/TDC sensor.
3. Disconnect the crank angle sensor connector and turn the ignition to the on position then using a high impedance analog voltmeter with the negative terminal grounded, check the voltage at terminal 4 of the crank angle sensor connector with the positive probe. If the voltmeter reads 5v replace the Crank Angle/TDC sensor. If the voltmeter reads 0v, turn the ignition OFF and check the wiring between the MPI controller and the TDC sensor connector.
