Interior - Gap In Lower R/H Steering Column Cover

SUBJECT:
Gap in Lower Right Steering Column Cover
OVERVIEW:
Steering column cover gap greater then 3 mm.
Inspect for a gap at the steering column cover. If the gap is greater then 3 mm proceed with repair procedure.
MODELS:
2010 (PM) Caliber
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built between September 01, 2010 (MDH0901XX).and September 21, 2010 (MDH0921XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a gap in the lower right steering column cover.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Inspect the steering column cover by grasping the cover with your right hand as shown (Fig. 1).
2. With a twisting motion pull the steering column cover away from the cluster, watch for a gap greater than 3 mm to appear between the cover and cluster.
3. Is the gap greater then 3 mm?
a. Yes >>> Perform repair procedure.
b. No >>> Return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
2. Remove the Air Bag Knee Blocker if equipped. Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in: DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 10 Restraints > Air Bag Knee Blocker.
3. Remove the left Instrument Panel end cap.
4. Remove the 2 screws attaching the cover to the Instrument panel
5. Remove the steering column cover.
6. Remove the upper right gold clip on the back side of the steering column cover and replace it with (P/N 68105526AA) silver clip.
7. Reinstall the steering column cover.
8. Reinstall the Air Bag Knee Blocker. Refer to the detailed procedures available in:
DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 10 Restraints > Air Bag Knee Blocker.
9. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
10. When completed, turn on the key and check the air bag light. If it the light stays on, check the connection to the air bag.
