TORQUE DESCRIPTIONEXAMINING CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS
NOTE: The cylinder head bolts should be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down, the bolt(s) should be replaced (Fig. 18).
CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS
Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in (Fig. 20). Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:
First:
All bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.)
Second:
Bolts 1-6 to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)
Bolts 7-10 to 49 Nm (35 ft. lbs.)
Third:
Bolts 1-6 to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.)
Bolts 7-10 to 49 Nm (35 ft. lbs.)
CAUTION: Do not use a torque wrench for the Fourth step.
Fourth:
Tighten all bolts in the specified sequence an additional 90° (1/4 Turn)
Intake Manifold
Tighten fasteners to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) in sequence shown in (Fig. 135).
Intake Manifold High Intake
Lower Intake manifold
Tighten bolt in sequence shown in (Fig. 140) to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
Intake Manifold High Intake
Upper Intake manifold
Tighten fasteners in sequence shown in (Fig. 141) to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.)
Crankshaft Main Bearings
Tighten bolts (1-10) to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) in sequence shown in (Fig. 62).
Tighten bolts (1-10) to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs. in sequence shown.
Tighten bolts (11-20) to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) in sequence shown.
After the main bearing bed plate is installed, check the crankshaft turning torque. The turning torque should not exceed 5.6 Nm (50 inch lbs.).
Crankshaft Vibration Damper
Tighten vibration damper bolt to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
Flexplate
Tighten bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
Oil Pump
Torque bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.).
Exhaust Manifold
Tighten in sequence shown in (Fig. 145) to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.).
Exhaust Manifold High Output
Exhaust Manifold
Tighten in sequence shown in (Fig. 149) to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.).
Water Pump
Tighten screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
