NUMBER: 08-026-03

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: September 12, 2003

SUBJECT:
Unable To Display Proper Radio Frequencies, Cannot Program Radio Stations, And/Or Poor Sound Quality

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves programming the REH (AM/FM/CD) radio to accept country specific radio frequencies.

MODELS:
2004 (KJ) Cherokee (International Market)
2004 (PL) Neon (International Market
2004 (PT) PT Cruiser (International Market)
2004 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Market)
2004 (TJ) Wrangler (International Market)

NOTE:
This service bulletin applies to vehicles sold in International Markets with radio sales code REH.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may arrive in country with incorrect radio frequency bands selected or no band selection made in the radio.

DISCUSSION:

This Service Bulletin provides information to properly program radio frequencies in the rare event a vehicle leaves the factory or port with the radio incorrectly programmed. The REH radio does not communicate on the Programmable Communications Interface (PCI) data bus network. Due to this, the following information is required to program the radio if required. Radio programming (if necessary) should be performed during New Vehicle Preparation.

COUNTRY CODE AND CABIN EQ SETTING:

There are 4 country codes that may be programmed depending on your location and radio frequency spacing. The selections are USA, EUR, ROW or JPN. If the region the vehicle will be driven in uses 10 kHz spacing on the AM band (i.e. 950, 960 etc.), set the Country Code to "USA". If the region uses 9 kHz spacing, has LW and MW Bands, and uses RDS (i.e. AF, PTY, TA, etc.), set the radio for "EUR". If neither of the previous settings apply, and the vehicle is not being driven in Japan, set the radio to "ROW". Vehicles driven in Japan must have the radio set to "JPN".

There are 10 cabin EQ settings available depending on the model of vehicle. The cabin EQ setting adjusts the radio output to provide the best sound for the vehicle's speaker and amplifier system. The EQ selections available are Flat, PT44, PL, PT27, RG, KJ, TJ-B, TJ-P JR27, and JR41. Select the EQ that applies to the vehicle model being worked on.

NOTE:
Do not select "Flat" or "TJ-P". These two selection do not apply to any models built.

PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

1. Battery must be connected, ignition in the OFF position, and radio in the OFF position.

NOTE:
If the radio was never programmed at the factory or port the country code and EQ curve programming mode would be automatically accessed at IGNITION ON and RADIO POWER ON.

2. Press and hold the "SET" button, then press and hold the "TA" and "3" buttons. With all three buttons held, COUNTRY EUR" is normally shown in the display as default. Release the three buttons.

3. To select the country code EUR, USA, ROW, or JPN, press the "RW" and "FF" buttons to scroll to the appropriate selection.

4. To save the country code, press the "TA" button. The code will flash for 3 seconds after which the country code is saved. To cancel the save and enter another country code, press the "TA" button again during the 3 seconds. The mode will revert back to STEP 2.

NOTE:
The country code and EQ curve programming mode is automatically cancelled if the "TA" button is not pressed within 5 seconds. "NOT SAVED" and "EXIT" is shown in the display.

5. After the country code is saved, "Cabin EQ FLAT" is shown in the display as a default. Select the EQ curve based on the vehicle (ie. PT-27 is a convertible PT Cruiser, TJ-B is a Base Wrangler, etc) by pressing the "RW" and "FF" buttons to scroll to the appropriate selection. The list of EQ curves available in memory are: FLAT, PT44, PL, PT27, RG, KJ, TJ-B, TJ-R JR-41 and JR-27, however, FLAT, TJ-P, JR-41, and JR-27 should not be used based on option restrictions.

NOTE:
The country code and EQ curve programming mode is automatically cancelled if the "RW" or "FF" button is not pressed within 5 seconds. "NOT SAVED" and "EXIT" is shown in the display.

6. To save the EQ curve, press the "TA" button. The curve will flash for 3 seconds after which the EQ curve is saved. "SAVED" and "EXIT" is shown in the display The country code and EQ curve programming mode is exited. To cancel the save and enter another curve, press the "TA" button again during the 3 seconds. The mode will revert back to step 4. The country code and EQ curve programming mode is automatically cancelled if the "TA" button is not pressed within 5 seconds. "NOT SAVED" and "EXIT" is shown in the display
