Engine/Transmission Controls - MIL ON/False DTC's
NUMBER: 18-034-02GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: Nov. 22, 2002
THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE MDS2 MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS CD2122 OR HIGHER, AVAILABLE DECEMBER 9, 2002.
SUBJECT:
Flash: MIL Illumination and Erroneous DTCs - Transaxle Shift Improvements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Next Generation Controller (NGC) including the Powertrain and Transaxle Control Modules (PCM/TCM) with new software.
MODELS:
2003 (LH) 300M/Concorde/Intrepid/LHS
NOTE:
THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO NOVEMBER 13, 2002 (MDH 1113XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
MIL illumination with any or all of the following Erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's):
P0339 - Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent
P0440 - Evaporative System Fault
The transaxle may exhibit unusual kick down shift operation (4-3/3-2 shifts at random times) and/or 3-2 closed throttle coast down shift bump.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRBIII(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If the condition(s) and/or DTC's listed are present, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
WHENEVER A PCM/TCM IS REPLACED OR REPROGRAMMED, THE SOFTWARE IN THE CONTROLLER AND DRB III(R) MUST BE VERIFIED AS HAVING THE LATEST REVISION LEVEL.
1. Connect a battery charger and set as close to 14 volts charge as possible.
2. Flash the PCM/TCM using the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRBIII(R).
NOTE:
DUE TO THE PCM/TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, A DTC MAY BE SET IN OTHER MODULES (BCM, MIC, SKIM, ETC.) WITHIN THE VEHICLE, IF SO EQUIPPED. SOME DTC'S MAY CAUSE THE MIL TO ILLUMINATE. ALL DTC'S RELATE TO A LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE MODULE THAT IS BEING REPROGRAMMED. CHECK ALL MODULES, RECORD THE FAULTS, AND ERASE THESE FAULTS PRIOR TO RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. ERASE ANY FAULTS IN THE PCM ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER MODULES HAVE HAD THEIR FAULTS ERASED.
NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW.
3. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 04669020 (Fig. 1). Attach the label to the PCM and/or TCM (NGC) as necessary and cover the label(s) with the clear plastic overlay.
4. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086AB and attach near the VECI label (Fig. 2).
