Decklid - Does Not Open With First Cycle Of Key Fob

NUMBER: 23-16-99

GROUP: Body

DATE: May 21, 1999

SUBJECT:
Decklid Does Not Open With First Cycle Of Key Fob Operation

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adjusting the decklid over slam bumpers to allow the decklid to open on the first cycle (two button pushes) of the key fob.

MODELS:

2000 (PL) Neon

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The decklid does not open after one cycle of the key fob (two button pushes), but does open after 2 or 3 cycles of the key fob button. This is possibly due to incorrect adjustment of the decklid over slam bumpers not an electrical problem with the key fob system. If the deck lid over slam bumpers are adjusted too far outward, the load on the striker prevents the latch from opening after only one cycle of the key fob.

DIAGNOSIS:
Stand directly behind the vehicle, cycle the key fob trunk button one time (2 button pushes). Listen for the trunk latch solenoid to function. It may be necessary to open the decklid and watch the solenoid cycle if there is any noise interference. If the trunk latch solenoid functions, perform the Repair Procedure. If the trunk latch solenoid does not function, refer to the diagnostics in the 2000 Neon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-0025), page 8P-5.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
THIS REPAIR IS COMPATIBLE WITH DAIMLERCHRYSLER'S MOBILE SERVICE PROGRAM AND DOES NOT REQUIRE HOISTS OR OTHER FULL SERVICE FACILITY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.

1. Open the decklid, mark each bumper and turn each overslam bumper 1/4 turn clockwise (Figure 1 & 2).

2. Close the decklid and cycle the key fob decklid button.

3. Repeat the overslam adjustment procedure (steps 1 & 2) until one cycle of the key fob opens the decklid.

NOTE:
THE OVER SLAM BUMPERS SHOULD NOT PROTRUDE MORE THAN 2O MM FROM THE DECKLID INNER SHEET METAL.

4. Check the decklid flushness to body aperture. If flushness is correct on each side, the repair is complete. If underflush or overflush continue to step 5.

5. Remove the plastic trim from around the decklid striker.

6. Loosen the two striker fasteners and adjust the decklid striker to correct the underflush or overflush condition.

7. Close the decklid to verity that the correct alignment has been achieved.

8. Open the decklid and replace the trim.
