Steering Column Shaft Lower Coupling Replacement
REMOVAL1. Position the vehicles front wheels in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
Steering Wheel Secured:
2. Secure the steering wheel in the STRAIGHT AHEAD position using a steering wheel holding tool.
Steering Column To Coupling Attachment:
3. Remove the pinch bolt safety pin from the steering column coupling pinch bolt.
4. Loosen the coupling pinch bolt retaining nut and remove pinch bolt from steering coupler (Pinch bolt nut is caged to coupler and is not removable). Separate the steering column upper coupling from the lower coupling.
5. Remove the two bolts holding the accelerator pedal to the floor pan.
Steering Column Coupling Seal:
6. Remove the coupling seal enclosing the steering column coupling.
7. Remove the four screws holding the lower dash cover to the floor pan.
8. Remove the coupling shield from around the top of the gear.
9. Raise the vehicle.
10. Using Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6372-1, remove the roll pin securing the lower coupling to the steering gear by tapping on it with a hammer.
11. Slide the coupling up off of the gear splines and remove the coupling.
INSTALLATION
1. Before installing the lower coupling, start the roll pin in the edge of the lower steering coupling. Be careful not to start the roll pin too deep causing it to protrude into the spline area.
2. Align the coupling keyway with the keyway on the gear stubshaft. Slide the coupling onto the gear splines until the coupling roll pin hole lines up with the gear spline cutout.
3. Using Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6372-1 and a hammer, install the roll pin until it's equally centered in the coupling, securing the lower coupling to the steering gear.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Install the coupling shield around the top of the gear.
6. Install the lower dash cover over the top of the coupling shield. Install the 4 screws holding the lower dash cover to the floor pan.
7. Install the coupling seal enclosing the steering column coupling inside the lower dash cover.
8. Install the two bolts holding the accelerator pedal to the floor pan.
9. Verify the vehicle's front wheels are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
10. Connect the steering column upper coupling to the lower coupling. install the pinch bolt and tighten the coupling pinch bolt retaining nut to a torque of 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.).
11. Install the pinch bolt safety pin in the end of the steering column coupling pinch bolt.
12. Remove the steering wheel holding tool.
