Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Service and Repair

All models use a single speed electric motor driven cooling system fans. The fan module(s) include a motor, fan blade, and support shroud. The module(s) are fastened to the radiator by screws.

REMOVAL-FAN MODULE

WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE THE CYLINDER BLOCK PLUG OR THE RADIATOR DRAINCOCK WITH THE SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.

1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
2. Drain cooling system below upper radiator hose level.
3. Remove upper radiator hose from radiator.

4. Remove the radiator to battery strut.
5. For vehicles equipped with dual fan modules, remove the battery and battery tray.
6. Disconnect fan module electrical connector(s).

Figure 28:

7. Remove fan module fasteners from radiator.
8. Lift fan shroud up and out of lower shroud attachment clips.

NOTE: For dual fan module applications, remove the left fan module first and then the right fan module.

FAN BLADE
There are no repairs to be made to the fan. If the fan is warped, cracked, or otherwise damaged, it must be replaced with only the recommended part for adequate strength, performance and safety.

Figure 29:

1. To remove fan from motor shaft, bench support the motor and motor shaft, while removing the fan retaining clip, so that the shaft and motor will not be damaged by excessive force. Surface burr removal may be required to remove fan from motor shaft. Do not permit the fan blades to touch the bench.
2. To install fan motor shaft, slide the fan over shaft. Support motor and shaft as above while installing fan retaining clip.

FAN MOTOR

WARNING: Do not disassemble the fan motor from the support bracket.

The electric fan motor is serviced as an assembly with the fan module.

FAN SHROUD
Some fan shrouds are equipped with flapped doors to prevent the shroud from restricting air flow at high speeds.
All vehicles have fan shrouds to improve fan air flow efficiency.

INSTALLATION-FAN MODULE
1. Install the fan module into the clips on the lower radiator attachment clips.

NOTE: For dual fan module applications, install the right fan module first and then the left fan module.

2. Install the fan module retaining screws and tighten to 7.5 Nm (65 inch lbs.).
3. Connect fan module electrical connector(s).
4. For vehicles equipped with dual fan modules, install the battery tray and battery.
5. Install the upper radiator hose to radiator. Align hose and position clamp so it will not interfere with the engine or the hood.
6. Install radiator to battery strut.
7. Connect negative cable to battery.
8. Fill cooling system.
